Strengthening Indigenous Inclusivity & Relationships with Native Stakeholders

To ensure thoughtful inclusivity of Native peoples and lands in American Rivers’ mission to address river threats, Tahoma Peak Solutions was asked to equip American Rivers with a comprehensive understanding of Native history, Tribal sovereignty, and forming meaningful Tribal relationships.

Tahoma Peak Solutions began with an educational series on Indigenous inclusivity, which included a course tailored specifically for American Rivers on unique Indigenous histories, cultures, and notions of water.

Following the inclusivity course, Tahoma Peak Solutions conducted an audit on American Rivers’ internal and external messaging and provided recommendations to ensure culturally responsive and responsible communications for Indigenous audiences.

Finally, Tahoma Peak Solutions facilitated a listening session where Native advocates and leaders in conservation, intertribal fish commissions, and Indigenous community land trusts convened with American Rivers, the Hydropower Reform Coalition, and the River Network. The four-hour roundtable session focused on Tribal priorities and set American Rivers on a tangible path towards an inclusive intersectional and interdisciplinary river protection movement with strengthened, meaningful Tribal relationships.
